Unit 2 Notes 5 Flashcards
Ionic Compounds
ionic compounds are composed of metals and non- metals. Greek prefixes are not used in naming or writing formulas. instead we use charges.
Binary Ionic Compounds
composed of a metal and a non-metal
Polyatomic Ionic Compounds
composed generally of a metal and 2 or more non-metals
Naming Ionic Compounds
- The name of the first ion as it appears on the periodic table or ions table
- The second ion if it is a single element end with “ide”. If the second ion is polyatomic it is named as it appears on the table.
Writing Formulas for Ionic Compounds
- write the symbols and their charge
- Check to see it the charges add up to zero.
i) if they add up to zero, rewrite the sympols w/o the charges
ii) if they do not add to be zero, criss cross the charges and write them as subscripts (wo the + or - sign)
Reactants
what you start with (LHS of equations)
Products
what you form (RHS of equations)
Coefficients
Numbers placed of in front of formulas to make the atoms on each side equal.
Types of Reactions
- Synthesis (composition)
- Decomposition
- Combustion
- Single Replacement
- Double Replacement
- Water Forming
Synthesis
To make something
A + B ———> AB
Decomposition
To break something down
AB ———> A + B
Combustion
To burn something, giving off heat and light
Hydrocarbons
compounds cosisting of hydrogen and carbon ,producing carbon dioxide and water.
Single Replacement
When one element in a compound replaces another
A + BC ———> AC + B
Double Replacement
Elements of one compound replace
elements of another compound
