Q

Shielding Effect

A
  • core e- reduce the attraction b/w the nucleus + the valence e- which allows the valence e- to drift out causing the size of the atom to increase.

Q

Atomic #

A
  • indicates the # of protons (p+) in the nucleus
  • defines what element an atom is
  • for a neutral atom it also indicates the # of electrons (e-)
    1 <– atomic #
    H
    1.0086- <– mass #

Lewis Diagrams

A

Lewis diagrams show the valence e- in an atom. Consist of the symbol + dots. The symbol represents the nucleus + core. e- (not in valence shell). The dots represent valence e-
