Day 1 (Jan 4) Notes Flashcards
3 States of Motion
- Vibration
- Translation
- Rotation
Kinetic Molecular Theory
matter is made up of tiny particles wnich are in constant motion. in a hot body the particles are moving faster than a cold body
Thermal Energy
The sum of kinetic and potential energy of the internal motion of the particles that make up an object.
Thermal Energy Transferred in 3 Ways:
- Convection
- Conduction
- Radiation
Convection
Heat transferred by the motion of fluids of different densities.ex, Boiling water
Conduction
Heat created by the collision of particles within a substance.ex. Cast iron frying pan
Radiation
Transfer of thermal energy through space in the form of electromagnetic waves
Temperature
the degree of warmth or cold measured in a quantitative term.
Thermal Equilibrium
State between two or more bodies where temperatures do not change.
ex. the rate at which energy flows from your hand to a door knob is equal to the rate at which the door knob flows to your hand
Important Temperatures (5)
0°C: Temperature at which water freeces
100°C: Boiling point of water (at sea level)
-273.15°C Absolute zero Icoldest possible temperature attainable
(ALL MOTION CEASES)
37°C: Human Body Temperature
22°C: Room Temperature
Celcius to Kelvin
add 273
Kelvin to Celcius
subtract 273
