Unit 2: Introduction to Meiosis Part 1 Ch.7 Flashcards
MCB 181R University of Arizona (11 cards)
What happens before both mitosis and meiosis?
A cell makes a complete copy of its DNA.
What is meiosis?
Two divisions to make four genetically non-identical cells that each have half the number of chromosomes sets.
What is the role of sexual reproduction?
Increases genetic variation by generating indivualds with new combinations of alleles.
Why is meiosis important for sexual reproduction?
Meiosis makes sexual reproduction possible.
What type of cells does meiosis start with?
Meiosis starts with a diploid cell (2 sets of chromosomes).
What is purpose of meiosis?
Meiosis makes sexual reproduction possible.
What type of cells does meiosis create?
Meiosis creates haploid cells (1 set chromosomes).
What are cells that divide through meiosis called?
Germ cells
What are other cells in the body (not germ cells) called?
Somatic cells
What do germ cells divide into through meiosis?
- Gametes
- Example: Sperm & Eggs
What is the result of fertilization?
A zygote (diploid, 2n).
