Unit 2: Homologous Chromsomes Ch.4 Flashcards
MCB 181R University of Arizona
What are Homologous Chromosomes?
Two chromosomes of the same type, carrying the same genes in the same locations. In sexually reproducing organisms, one is inherited from each parent.
Do homologous chromosomes have identical DNA sequences?
No, while they carry the same genes, they can have different versions of those genes, called alleles.
What is the significance of homologous chromosomes in sexual reproduction?
They ensure that diploid organisms receive a complete set of a chromosomes from each parent, maintaining the correct number of chromosomes across generations.
What is the relationship between genes and homologous chromosomes?
Homologous chromosomes carry the same genes in the same order, but sepecific version of this genes (alleles) may differ.
