Unit 2 (Homeostasis) Flashcards
What is the definition of homeostasis?
It maintains constant internal environment (Equilibrium/balance) in response to stress. AND/OR It is the ability to adjust cellular and physiological processes to maintain internal balance
What is stress?
Anything that disrupt homeostasis (Internal balance).
What are the 3 types of stress?
Environmental, Physical, Emotional
What are the 4 steps of homeostasis?
- Variable (Can be modified) ex.: Body temperature
- Receptor (Detect the change) ex.:Thermoreceptor
- Integrator/Control Center (Interpretation of info) ex.: Brain (CNS)
- Effectors (Response, acts on variable to bring values back to normal) ex.: Muscles and glands.
What are the 2 systems involved in the control?
Nervous and Endocrine System
What are two differences between the nervous and the endorcine system?
The nervous system sends quick nerve impulses while the endocrine system sends slow messages through hormones. AND the nervous system has a really shrt duration while the effects of hormones have a longer duration.
What is a negative feedback loop?
SYstems in which, by their response to the stimulus, put an end to the initial stimulus or at least reduce it.
What is a positive feedback loop?
It strenghtens or reinforces the initial stimulus. They do not happen often, since they can be life threatening for the body. Ex.: Blood clotting, ovulation, childbirth.
