Reproductive cells Flashcards
How is the male reproductive cell called?
Sperm
Are sperm cells haploid or diploid?
Haploid, it is a gamete
What is the important organelle responsible for the production of energy in the cell?
Mitochondria
What is the acrosome?
It is near the surface of the sperm cell, it contains enzymes responsible for the penetration of the ovum.
What structure produces sperm?
Testes (Sertoli cells)
What structures regulate the production of sperm?
Hypothalamus (GnRH) -> Anterior pituitary gland (LH, FSH) -> Leydig cells in testes (Testosterone)
How are the female reproductive cells called?
Ova (Egg cells)
Are ova haploid or diploid cells?
Haploid (It is a gamete)
How are they produced?
Every month, from puberty to menopause, one (or more) primary egg cell will mature into a secondary egg cell, ready for fertilization.
Where are egg cells found?
In ovaries.
What structures regulate ova?
Hypothalamus (GnRH) -> Anterior pituitary gland (FSH, LH) -> Ovaries (Progesterone, Estrogen).
