Unit 2 - Elements and Compounds Flashcards
What are the three parts which make up an Atom?
- Proton
- Electron
- Neutron
What is the relationship between the 3 atomic compositions?
- Electrons are not in the nucleus, and surround the middle part –> negative charge (low mass)
- Neutrons and Protons are in the middle (high mass)
Non-isotopes : Protons and Neutrons equal same amount
1 amu (atomic mass unit)
1.661 x 10E-24
What is an isotope?
Atoms with different number of NEUTRONS
same number of protons and e- but different atomic mass
Alkali Metals
- Shiny Solids react violently with water
- Group 1A
Alkaline Earth Metals
Group 2A
Halogens
Group 7A
Noble Gases
8A
Ionic Bonding Occurs with which groups?
Bonding between:
metals 1a-3a
transition metals + no metals 5A-7A
Covalent Bonding occurs with what groups?
Non-metals
What occurs in Ionic Bonding
- Atoms will share electrons with another molecule
- Gain Electron –> Negative Bonding
- Lose Electron –> Positive Bonding
Ion Charges
1a - 1+
2a - 2+
3b-2b (Transition Metals –> known will know when given)
3a - 3+
4a - 2+
5a - 3-
6a - 2-
7a - 1-
8a - neutral
how do you name cations?
name of element + cationic charge
