Unit 2- Control Of Reproduction Flashcards
What are hormones ?
Hormones are chemical messengers produced by the endocrine glands and secreted into the blood stream
What do hormones control?
Hormones control..
Puberty
Sperm production
The menstrual cycle
What does a follicle contain ?
An immature egg
What Is The corpus luteum ?
The follicle after the egg is released
What are the two phases of the menstrual cycle?
The follicular phase
The luteal phase
What is the effect of FSH? (Males)
It promotes sperm production in the seminiferous tubules.
What is the effect of ICSH ?
It stimulates interstitial cells to produce testosterone
What does testosterone influence?
The production of sperm in the seminiferous tubules
Activated the prostate gland and seminiferous tubules
Stages of negative feedback control of testosterone
As the concentration of testosterone increases it inhibits the production of FSH and ICSH by the pituitary gland
This causes and decrease in testosterone and the pituitary gland is less inhibited allowing the production of FSH and ICSH to increase
This leads to and increase in testosterone and the cycle is repeated continually
What is the effect of FSH? (Females)
This stimulates the maturation of a follicle and stimulates ovary tissue to secrete oestrogen
What is the effect of LH?
This triggers ovulation and brings about the development of the corpus luteum
It also stimulates the production of progesterone
What is the effect of oestrogen?
Stimulates the proliferation of The Endometrium
Stimulates the secretion of LH
What is the effect of progesterone?
Stimulates the vascularisation of the Endometrium
Inhibits the secretion of FSH and LH
What is the Endometrium?
The inner layer of the uterus
What is the first day of mensturation indicates by ?
Menstrual blood flow
