UNIT 2 - Compounds with a Multivalent Metal Flashcards
1
Q
Multivalent metal
A
a metal that can form two or more different positive ions
-multi = many
-valent = refers to capacity to bond
ex. An iron ion can have a charge of 3+ or 2+
-the periodic table lists the dif possible ion charges FOR EACH METAL, with the most common ion charge FIRST
2
Q
The Rules for writing the NAME of COMPOUNDS CONTAINING A MULTIVALENT METAL
A
- Name the metal ion with the ion charge indicated in brackets and the nonmetal ion
- Below them, write the metal and nonmetal elements again, without the ion charges
- Flip-Flop & Drop
- Simplify the subscripts
Ex. Manganese (IV) Oxide
a) Mn4+ O2- = b) Mn O = c) Mn4O2 - Mn2O
3
Q
The rules for writing the FORMULAS of COMPOUNDS CONTAINING A MULTIVALENT METAL
A
- Name the metal ion (name in the periodic table)
- Determine the charge of the metal (reverse flip-flop & drop) Ex. Cu2O -> Cu1+O2-
- Write the charge of the metal ion in Roman numerals in brackets after the metal
- Name the nonmetal ion by ending the element name (from periodic table) with the suffix “ide”
- Do a QUALITY check to determine that the chagre is possible

Q
Roman numerals
A
I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII
