UNIT 2 - Compounds Flashcards
Lesson 03/07/2025
Q: What is a compound?
A: A pure substance made up of two or more different kinds of elements held together by chemical bonds.
Q: What is a chemical bond?
A: A link between two or more atoms that holds the atoms together. It can either be covalent or ionic.
Q: What is a covalent compound?
A: A compound formed when two or more nonmetal atoms bond by sharing valence electrons.
Q: What is a covalent bond?
A: A strong attraction between atoms that forms when atoms share valence electrons.
Example: Water is a covalent compound where two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom are joined by covalent bonds.
Q: What are the properties of covalent compounds?
A:
Low melting points
Relatively soft due to weaker forces
Poor conductors of electric current and heat
Q: What are ionic compounds?
A: Compounds formed when atoms combine and one atom donates its electron(s) to another atom. Made of ions (atoms that have lost or gained electrons).
Q: What is an ionic bond?
A: A strong attraction between oppositely charged ions, formed when an atom donates electrons (metal becomes positive ion) and another atom gains electrons (nonmetal becomes negative ion).
Q: What is the structure of ionic compounds?
A: Ionic compounds consist of positive and negative ions arranged in repeating patterns called lattices.
Q: What are the properties of ionic compounds?
A:
High melting points
Hard and brittle
Conduct electric current when liquid or dissolved
Q: What is a polyatomic ion?
A: An ion composed of two or more atoms combined via covalent bonds, with a charge as a collection.
