Unit 2 - Ch 8 Emotions Flashcards
Plato’s view of psyche
Pie chart. Reason is smallest slice, appetite is the biggest. Emotion is in the middle and leads to either the former or latter
Mind vs Brain
Mind - non physical. Thoughts, emotions.
Brain - physical brain structure
Freud’s view of the mind
Three layers of the mind (Conscious, pre-conscious, unconscious)
Theatre of the mind.
Displaced emotions?
Emotions connected to thing is bad, so you replace thing with scapegoat. (Unlinking and linking to something else)
What is Freud say about emotions?
Emotions can be displaced, disguised, or transformed
Unexpressed emotions never die
Mapping emotions, two dimensions
Arousal - How active or passive an emotion can be in terms of bodily affect (high energy or low energy emotion?)
Valence - How positive or negative the emotion is
James-Lange Theory of emotion
Body reacts first and then mind reads bodily cues to know what it’s feeling
Cannon-Bard Theory of emotion
Mind and body create responses at the same time
Two-factor Theory of emotion
(Schacter and Singer)
Bodily response (first factor) is then interpreted to give a label (second factor) which then determines the emotion.
LeDoux Theory of emotion
Two pathways of the mind, one fast one slow.
Fast: Stimulus > Thalamus > Amygdala > action. (Snap judgments)
Slow: Stimulus > Thalamus > Cortex > Amygdala > Action (Let’s you think of you snap action is the right one)
OH SHIT ITS A BEAR (Snap action), Oh, no, it’s just a bush (slower pathway)
Linking.
Links between - Thoughts (Ideas) and Affects (emotions)
However, these ideas can be unlinked and relinked to other “scapegoat” things
Sub-fields in psychology that focus more on the brain than the mind
Biological psychology
Neuropsychology
Sub-field is psychoanalysis that studies both the brain and mind
Neuropsychoanalysis
Fields of study involving the mind
Psychology
Psychoanalysis
Philosophy
Cognitive science
