Unit 2 - Case Studies - Theme C Flashcards
FREIBURG
What problem did they encounter?
Population growth lead to increased traffic congestion in historical city centre
FREIBURG
Give 4 solutions?
- Created 200 miles of cycle paths, as well as ‘bike and rides’
- Investment in public transport. New tram routes opened in 1983
- Pedestrianised city centre
- Park and ride facilities on edge of city for commuters
FREIBURG
Give 3 introduction facts?
- Located in South Germany
- Population of 200,000 people
- Historic city centre located within old walls
FREIBURG
Give 4 impacts?
- 4000 fewer cars travel through city centre each day, than in 1970
- 70% of journeys now made by tram
- Public transport use doubled since 1980
- People in wider region still affected by policies that encourage car use
CHINA
Give fact about population growth?
Growing at 1 million per month
CHINA
Give 2 facts about economic growth?
Economy is growing at 9.5%
2006 average earnings five times larger than 1981 average earnings
CHINA
Why do population growth and economic growth mean increased demand of resources?
More people want more things. These then have to be made. As economy grows, people want higher order goods, therefore more resources needed
CHINA
Give 2 ways this increased demand puts pressure on people?
- Traffic congestion, commuting to work in Beijing can take up to 3 hours
- Water supplies polluted in 90% of cities
CHINA
Give 2 ways increased demand puts more pressure on the environment?
- Waste, 4 million fridges thrown away each year. This releases greenhouse gases like CFC’s
- Deforestation, 10 million hectares lost in 5 years carbon sink and contributes to global warming
DENMARK
Give 3 introduction facts?
- Wind power generates 20% of Denmarks electricity
- Has largest wind farm in world, Horns Rev, built 14km off the mainland
- 11 onshore turbines were built in 2000
DENMARK
Give 3 benefits of wind power?
- Reduction of greenhouse gas production
- Reduces dependence on imported fuels, gives Denmark security of supply
- Electric vehicles may become more popular as energy companies are looking to establish a car charging grid with the aid of ,” Project Better Place”
DENMARK
Give 3 negatives of wind power?
- Some people view wind farms as unsightly
- Wind turbines may harm marine life while they are built, however it’s estimated less than 0.1% of seabed will be lost
- Producing turbines can be expensive, Horns Rev cost £245 million to construct
ARC21
Give 3 introduction facts?
- Belfast City council serves around 270,000 people
- Every year 130,000 Tonnes of waste are sent to landfill
- 29% of waste is recycled in Belfast, however they aim to increase this to 50% by 2020
ARC21
Give 3 reasons why a range of sustainable waste management approaches are required?
- There are environmental concerns surrounding landfill sites, eg. Groundwater pollution or even safety from toxic gases
- Belfast City council may be fined £4 million for not reaching their EU targets
- 1 MBT unit is not enough, so plans are being developed for an MBT unit and an EFW plant near Mallusk
ARC21
What is an MBT unit?
Facility that provides Mechanical Biological Treatment, which composts organic waste, and sends any remaining waste to an EFW facility
ARC21
What is an EFW facility?
An Energy from Waste facility, uses an incinerator to burn waste that can’t be recycled or composted , which creates electricity by turning a turbine
NAM HA LAOS
Give 3 introduction facts?
- Nam Ha is an area of Laos in South East Asia
- It covers a 2224m2 area
- Area became protected by being declared a National Biodiversity Conservation Area in 1993
NAM HA LAOS
Who created this ecotourism project? Who is the governments tourism authority working closely with?
UNESCO
- Ministry of Agriculture
- Department of Forestry Resource Conservation
- Ministry of Information and Culture
NAM HA LAOS
Give 3 aims of the ecotourism project?
- Contribute to conservation of natural and cultural heritage
- Involve local communities in development and management of tourism
- Use tourism as a tool to promote development of rural areas
NAM HA LAOS
Give 4 impacts of this ecotourism project?
- Tourism industry expanding rapidly, 737,000 international arrivals in 2000, compared to 38,000 in 1991
- Nam Ha Eco - guide Service earned $34,400 in just over a year, contributed to 40% of village income
- Local people are more aware of environment than before, lead to emphasis on conservation
- Guides and tourists going on trekking trails deter poachers who would illegally hunt
