Titian’s longtime career was reconcile to be fame by experimenting his work in many different styles of painting.

Titian’s paintings have several textures he used for his expressive handling of oil paint, dynamic compositions, masterful use of color, and highly naturalistic subject matter. The examples:

1) Allegory of Prudence: Titian lets the rough, visible texture of the canvas show in the background, which affects the visual character of the painting from unblended colors.

2) Isabella d’Este: Titian created texture from the rough surface of the canvas, the contrast of fabric and objects, and paint left visible by not blending his brushstrokes.

3) Pastoral Concert: Sfumato creates a hazy texture that Titian loved to use in his paintings which enhances a sense of mystery about the women.

4) Venus of Urbino: Titian’s textures bounce around from her soft skin, to her hair, flowers, sheets, curtain, and dog fur.

Some characteristics of the Baroque style in sculpture and painting grandeur, sensuous richness, drama, dynamism, movement, tension, emotional exuberance, and a tendency to blur distinctions between the various arts.

Baroque art is characterized by emotion with elaborate and dramatic details. It multiple vanishing points and diagonal lines move our eyes in different directions. And, the backdrops are often without many details and has dark colors. Baroque artists used chiaroscuro and tenebrism techniques to manipulate light and color contrasts and add drama to their paintings. It is very likely Titian’s style is the source of influence for this change.

A

Chiaroscuro and tenebrism both focus on the high contrast between light and dark.

The key difference, however, between chiaroscuro and tenebrism is found in the shadows. Where chiaroscuro uses its light and shadow to create depth behind the subject, tenebrism goes full darkness.
