Baroque Style vs. Renaissance Style
1) Baroque art is characterized by emotion with elaborate and dramatic details. Renaissance art is characterized by the fusion of religion and science in order to emphasize Humanism through art.
2) In Renaissance art, the composition consisted of horizontal and vertical lines, like the Last Supper paintings. In Baroque art, multiple vanishing points and diagonal lines move our eyes in different directions.
3) In the Renaissance, the backgrounds were more fully detailed parts of the paintings, even if they seemed insignificant to the story, like Leonardo’s Mona Lisa. In the Baroque period, the backdrops are often without many details and has dark colors. Baroque artists used chiaroscuro and tenebrism techniques to manipulate light and color contrasts and add drama to their paintings. It is very likely Titian’s style is the source of influence for this change.
