Left realism
Look at what factors cause individuals to commit crimes
Left realism - Lea and Young identified 3 causes of crime
- Relative deprivation
- Subculture
- Marginalisation
Relative deprivation
If they feel deprived, it leads to criminal behaviour due to more materialistic expectations + self interest = resorting to crime
Subculture
Formed due to feeling deprived. Some have crime as the solutions to closing the ‘deprivation gap’ (ghettos in the USA)
Marginalisation
Unemployed youth are treated as if they are not important. They experience frustration so they will commit crimes.
Left realists solution to crime
Improving policy and control, dealing with deep rotted causes and working with multi agencies
What are multi agencies?
Social services and local council
