Personal reasons: Fear
People sometimes don’t report crimes as they are fearful of the consequences of doing so and what the perpetrator might do as a reprisal for reporting the crime
Personal reasons: Shame
Feeling ashamed that you have allowed yourself to become a victim of crime
Personal reasons: Disinterest
Not reporting a crime because you are not interested in the crime or with what has occurred. This could be as you were not directly affected by it or because you don’t feel that it is worth your time to report it
Personal reasons: Not affrcted
Not reporting a crime because you didn’t come to any harm or was not affected by it
Social reason: Lack of knowledge
You may not have known a crime was being committed or you do not know enough about the offence to report it.
Social reason: Complexity
The details of a crime are so complex, so it is hard to determine who the perpetrators are or what was actually done.
Social reason: Lack of media interest
People will feel that no one will care as there won’t be media interest to help push for prosecution.
Social reason: Lack of public concern
People may feel that the crime will be dismissed as it could be lacking in importance to the public and people won’t push for prosecution.
Cultural reason: Culture bound
In some cultures, the crimes committed may be traditionally accepted and not considered to be a crime by the perpetrators and their wider community.
