Functionalism - Durkheim key assumption
Crime has two positive functions
What are the two positive functions according to Durkheim?
Crime reinforces value consensus and crime acts as a warning device.
Crime reinforces value consensus
When people commit crime, they are punished so people learn right/wrong behaviour which discourages others from committing crimes
Crime acts as a warning device
It suggests that social order is breaking down, which prompts the government to do something about it.
When deviance is necessary (Durkheim)
It sets boundaries and helps us evolve. Without it, society stagnate. If everyone conformed there would be no change.
