Unit 2-(a) Fuels-A. Combustion Flashcards
What is combustion? (2)
- burning
- reacting with oxygen
What is a fuel?
A chemical burned to produce energy.
What kind of compound are found in oil and natural gas?
mainly hydrocarbons
What is a hydrocarbon?
A compound which contains hydrogen and carbon only
What do hydrocarbons produce when burned (complete combustion)?
carbon dioxide and water
What is the test for carbon dioxide?
Turns lime water from clear to milky/cloudy
What are the products of incomplete combustion in hydrocarbons?
Carbon monoxide and carbon
In a petrol engine which poisonous gases are formed form nitrogen and oxygen?
nitrogen oxides
What poisonous gas do some fuels produce when burned?
sulphur dioxide
What kind of harmful particles are produced by incomplete combustion in Diesel engines?
soot particles
How can air pollution from combustion of hydrocarbons be reduced?
using catalytic converters
