Unit 1-(a) Substances-B. Compounds and Elements Flashcards
What does the -ide ending signify?
Contains two elements indicated.
How is a compound formed?
When elements react together.
What do the -ite and -ate ending signify?
Contain two compounds but also oxygen.
What are chemical reactions?
The formation of one or more new substances.
How can chemical reactions be identified?
- colour change
- gas created (effervescence)
- precipitate formed
- change in energy
What is an endothermic reaction?
Take in energy from the surroundings. Products have more chemical energy that reactants.
What is an exothermic reaction?
Release energy into the surroundings. Reactants have more chemical energy than products.
What is a mixture?
When two or more substances come together without reacting. Such as air.
What is the test for oxygen?
Relights a glowing splint.
What is a solution?
When a solute dissolves in a solvent.
What is a dilute solution?
Less concentrated than a concentrated solution.
What is a saturated solution?
No more solute can dissolve it it.
What does insoluble mean?
Cannot dissolve in water.
What does soluble mean?
Can dissolve in water.
What are the 5 state symbols?
solid (s) liquid (l) gas (g) aqueous (aq) molten (m)
