Unit 1-(d) Bonding, Structure and Properties-A. Bonding Flashcards
Why do atoms form bonds?
So that they can achieve a stable electron arrangement
What holds atoms together?
atoms
What happens to electrons in a covalent bond?
they are shared
What is the covalent bond a result of?
two positive nuclei being held together by a common attraction for a shared pair of electrons
How strong are covalent bonds?
pretty strong
What is a polar covalent bond?
When the attraction of the atoms for the bonded electrons is different. The electrons are unequally shared
Give an example of a substance with polar covalent bonds…
water
When is an ionic compound formed?
when metals combine with non metals.
How are positive ions formed?
by metal atoms losing electrons (oxidation)
How are negative ions formed?
By non metal atoms gaining electrons (reduction)
What is ionic bonding?
The electrostatic force of attraction between oppositely charged ions.
What is metallic bonding?
The electrostatic force of attraction between positively charged ions and delocalised electrons.
