Unit 1-(b) Reaction Rates-C. Catalysts Flashcards
Which two ways can catalysts be classified?
homogeneous or heterogeneous
What is a catalyst?
A substance used to speed up the rate of reaction and is not used up by the reaction.
How to heterogeneous catalysts work?
by adsorption of reactant molecules
What is a heterogeneous catalyst?
One where the reactants are in a different state to the catalyst
What is a homogeneous catalyst?
One where the reactants are in the same state as the catalyst
Give a few everyday examples of catalysts…
-enzymes
Are catalysts used in industry?
yes
What does catalyst poisoning do?
Reduces the surface area of a catalyst.
What two processes do industrial catalysts have to undergo when they have impurities?
regenerated
renewed
What do catalytic converters in cars catalyse?
conversion of poisonous carbon monoxide and oxides of nitrogen to carbon dioxide and nitrogen.
what kind of petrol do cars with catalytic converters have to use and why?
lead free to stop poisoning
What do enzymes catalyse?
chemical reactions in living cells of plants and animals
Can enzymes be used in industry?
yes
