Unit 2 Flashcards
Is Ca+2 an atom or an ion?
Ion
Positively charged ions have (an excess,a defiance you of electrons they are called (cations, anions)?
Deficiency cations
The new system formed in a chemical reaction (right of arrow)?
Products
02 represents (an atom,or molecule)?
Molecule
A substance composed of one type of atom
Element
A one or two letter expression to represent an element
Symbol
The combination of chemical formula that represents what occurs in a chemical reaction?
Reactants
A substance composed of an anion and Cation
Ionic compound
The physical property of water that would allow us to float a paper clip on the surface of beaker?
Surface Tention
Water freeze at this temperature
0*c
List characteristics of pure water
Clear,colorless,tasteless
A mixture that APPEARS uniform throughout is said to be?
Homogeneous
A mixture which does NOT appear uniform thought out is said to be?
Heterogeneous
The smallest particle of unit that possesses the property of an element and is the building block of matter
Atom
A substance composed of atoms of 2 or more elements linked together chemically in fixed proportions
Compound
The smallest unit of compound that retains the properties of theta substance
Molecule
A process in which new substances with new properties are formed?
Chemical reactions
A substances mass per unit of volume
Density
A mixture characterized by large particles that settles out
Suspension
A mixture characterized by intermediate-sized paticles which do not settle out but reflected light passing though
Colloid
A mixture characterized by small particles which cannot be seen and do not reflect light passing though
Solution
In a solution, the material that does the dissolving
Solvent
In a solution the material that is dissolved
Solute
Properties which can be observed without changing identify of substance
Physical
Why did we test distilled water in the water testing lab?
It has no ions so we know what a test would look like
Why did we test the calcium ion reference solution in the water testing lab.
It contained calcium ions so we know what a positive test looks like
Even if a test was negative does it mean there were no ions.why
No,it cannot confirm the absence of an ion. It might have been present
What would Precipitate look like ?
It would turn cloudy it may settle out over time
Why were a reference solution and distilled water used in each test.
It allowed to compare the other test with what a test would look like with less ions
The “glue” that hold different kinds of atoms together is the attraction between particles witness these changes ?
Ionic bond
Opposite
