Unit 2&3 CHEMISTRY Flashcards
pH
&
pH Scale
A measure of how acidic a solution is
x < 7 = Acidic
7 = Neutral (Pure Water)
x > 7 = Basic
BUFFER
Compounds that help maintain pH
IONS
2 TYPES
Are any atom or molecule w/ a charge
Cations (+) charge
Anions (-) charge
SALTS
Combining a Cation & Anion gives you salt
Salts typically dissolve in water
SALTS THAT DISSOLVE IN WATER
Electrolyte because it can conduct electricity
MEMBRANE POTENTIAL
Separating Ions across a Cell Membrane causes a Membrane Potential (Voltage) to form
DIFFUSION
Passive movement of Atoms or Molecules down a concentration gradient (spread out)
(WATER FOLLOWS SALTS)
OSMOSIS
High concentration to low concentration
TONICITY
3 TYPES
Cells in a solution
HYPERTONIC - Very salty/sugary (cell shriveled)
ISOTONIC - Stays the same (Normal)
HYPOTONIC - Less salty/sugary (cell swells/burst)
