Unit 2 Flashcards
what are plate tectonics
Plates
- are large slabs of rock that cover the earth’s crust
- The earth is made up of mantle, crust and the core
Why do plates move
- heat escapes from the core heating up the mantle
- the heat generates convection’s currents
- convection currents help to move the plates
what are the three types of plate movement
divergent, convergent and transform
Plate movement
there are only three directions of plate movement
Divergent
plates that move away from each other
(map of the world’s volcanoes occur along divergent plate boundaries)
Convergent
come together/plates that move towards each other
Transform
slide past/ plates that move past each other
layers of the earth
-crust
-mantle
-core
Crust (lithosphere)
its lightest, most buoyant rock layer.
-thin and brittle
Mantle
the thick zone of magma beneath the earth’s lithosphere is known as the mantle
-hot and molten
Core
-the dense middle section of the earth is the core
-outer core
-very hot and dense
-approx.3000-4000°
Measuring Earthquakes
magnitude-a number that describes size of an earthquake
seismograph-on instrument that responds to and records ground motion
weak seismograph
have smaller squiggles
strong seismograph
have bigger squiggles
the science of earthquakes
-hypocentre
-epicentre
-foreshock
-aftershock
-mainshock
-plate boundary
