climate Flashcards
what is the difference between weather and climate
weather is short term
and climate is long term
weather
-short term variation in atmosphere
eg weather was good yesterday
climate
-weather condition over long period
-climate change has become a burning issue worldwide
eg. its gonna be a warm summer
what are the six factors that influence or affect the climate of a region
- Latitude
- Ocean currents
- Winds and Air Masses
4.Elevation
5.Relief
6.Nearness to water
latitude
distance from the equator helps to determine whether a region is hot or cold
How latitude determines cooler and warmer areas
- As latitude increases temperature decrease
-further from the equator=less sun/cooler
-closer to the equator=more sun/warmer
ocean currents
the temperature of an ocean current affects the temperature of the air that passes over it
wind and air masses
winds and air masses carry the temperature of the water over land
elevation
-elevation is the distance on the earth above sea level
-As elevation increases the temperature of the air decreases
relief
- relief refers to the shape of the surface of the land
-determined amount of precipitation a region receives
eg.Bergen,Norway
Nearness to water
eg maritaime climate and contintal climate
maritime
-climate in areas near an ocean
continental climate
-climate increase far from the ocean
criteria for maritime climate (close to water)
-temperature range-less than 25 degress
-total precipitation-greater than 1000mm
criteria for continental climate(away from water)
-total precipitation-less than 1000mm
