glaciers Flashcards
glaciers and the ice ages
-there have been at least 4 ice ages in the past 2.5 million years
-As large ice sheets advanced over canada they changed into landscape
what is glaciation
the process of ice advancing covering large areas of land
How do glaciers advance
-glaciers advance when snowfall exceeds melting
-Heat and pressure from the weight of the glacier because a slight melting at the base
-gravity pulls the glacier making “flow”
-glaciation can have erosional (stripping away or removing material) and depositional effects (adding material)
Erosional effects of glaciation
-The erosional effects of glaciers are responsible for changing drainage patterns and creating new lakes and streams
what are the two categories of depositional effects of glaciation
- depositing by ice
- depositing by water
Depositonal effects of glaciation by ice
glacial till and Moraines
glacial till
debris, such as loose sediments and rocks that are collected and deposited by glaciers
Moraines
deposits of till that form at the edges of a glacier which are left behind as glaciers melt
Depositional effects of glaciation by water
-the weight and movement of glaciers form lake basins
-As the climate warms ice sheets melt
- water fills the basins creating glacial lakes eg. the great lakes
