-multiculturalism:a government policy that encourages people to keep their cultural heritage
-The Canadian Act
(became law in 1988)
-the act reflects the government commitment towards promoting a diverse,multicultural society

-most new immigrants to Canada settle in large cities
-Toronto attracts more immigrants than any other city in Canada

-immigration to Canada reflects various historical push and pull factors

-Canada’s immigration policy controls who is permitted to come and settle in canada
-sets prerequisities for entry
-designed to grow the economy and aid those in need
categories of immigration
-immigration to Canada falls into two categories
1. Economic
2.Social and Humanitarian
Economic Immigration
-economic immigrants are accepted into Canada because they benefit the economy
-More than 60% of immigrants to Canada can be temporary or permanenet
Economic Immigration Permanent residents
may include:
-skilled workers
-trades people
-those with Canadian work experiences
-those wishing to start a business in Canada
Economic Immigrants temporary residents
temporary workers are allowed into Canada for two reasons:
1.to fill temporary labour shortages
2.To allow people with extraordinary talents contribute to Canada’s economy and cultural
Social and humanitarian immigration
there are two classes of social and humanitarian immgration
1.family class
2.Refugee class
Social and humanitarian immigration:family class
-aims to reunify families
-citizens are allowed to sponsor family members who want to move to Canada
Sponsor- Aperson who ndertakes the responsiblites of legally bringing an immigrant to Canada
social and humanitrain immigration refugee class
-Aims to help people escape danger in ther home countries
-Refugees:are people who move to another country because they fear for their safety in their home country
-Canada is among the word leaders in refugee reseltment
Demography
the study of population and implications of changes in the population
eg. what are the consequences of a rapidly growing population
Natural increase
birth rate- the number of births per 1000 people
death rate-The number of deaths per 1000 people
The Natural Increase Rate
-natural increase rate-the difference between a countries birth rate and death rate is referred to as the natural increase rate
-the reason for population increase or decline in many countries
The Impact of Migration
-immigration rate: the number of people permanetly arriving in a country in a given year per 1000 people
-Emigration rate:the number of people who permanetly leave a country in a given year per 1000 people
The Net Migration Rate
net migration rate: the combined impact of immigration and emigration on a countries population
-high net migration is important for countries with low birth rates
-countries like Canada depend on immigration to grow their population

Brain Drain
the loss of highly educated or skilled people from a country because of immigration
