Multiculturalism
-multiculturalism:a government policy that encourages people to keep their cultural heritage
-The Canadian Act
(became law in 1988)
-the act reflects the government commitment towards promoting a diverse,multicultural society
Where do immigrants settle
-most new immigrants to Canada settle in large cities
-Toronto attracts more immigrants than any other city in Canada

-ethnic groups give areas that they settle in a cultural imprint
-cultural imprint:the effect a group has on the characteristics of a neighbourhood

-chain immigration:the pattern of migration whereby one wave of immigrants settle in a region or city,thereby encouraging a second wave, and so on

-housing
-educational
-healthcare
-religious -social and recreational

-The sources of immigration to Canada changes from year to year
-immigration to Canada reflects various historical push and pull factors
eg.The irish potato famine(1896-1913)
CANADA’S IMMIGRATION POLICY
-Canada’s immigration policy controls who is permitted to come and settle in canada
-sets prerequisities for entry
-designed to grow the economy and aid those in need
categories of immigration
-immigration to Canada falls into two categories
1. Economic
2.Social and Humanitarian
Economic Immigration
-economic immigrants are accepted into Canada because they benefit the economy
-More than 60% of immigrants to Canada can be temporary or permanenet
Economic Immigration Permanent residents
may include:
-skilled workers
-trades people
-those with Canadian work experiences
-those wishing to start a business in Canada
Economic Immigrants temporary residents
temporary workers are allowed into Canada for two reasons:
1.to fill temporary labour shortages
2.To allow people with extraordinary talents contribute to Canada’s economy and cultural
Social and humanitarian immigration
there are two classes of social and humanitarian immgration
1.family class
2.Refugee class
