Rock cycle Flashcards
definition of a rock cycle
The rock cycle is a web of processes that outlines how each of the three major rock types—igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary
what are three types of rocks
- sedimentary
- igneous
- metamorphic
How does a igneous rock form
it forms when magma cools
what are the 2 types of igneous rock
Extrusive: cool above the earths surface/exits
Intrusive:cool below earths surface/inside
Weathering
breaking down of rocks by water, wind, chemicals, and living things
Erosion
the moving of broken-up pieces of rock
Deposition
the building up of eroded material in a new location
How does a sedimentary rock form
created after millions of years of compaction and cementation of lose sediments
eg. limestone and sandstone
How does a metamorphic rock form
igneous and sedimentary rock exposure great amounts of heat and pressure
eg. marble,slate and quartz
What is till
Glacial till is the sediment deposited by a glacier.
