How do you preform a preliminary interpretation-step by step analysis?
A
- Check patient history/symptoms
- Check CCA for inflow/local/outflow obstructions, compare RT to LT
- Grade ICA
- psv and edv
- Ratio
- Image % and characteristics of plaque
- Do they agree? Why not? Find a reason.
- Check ECA for stenosis
- Check VERT for direction, obstruction
- Check SCA for obstruction
- Check for other pathology
- Do steps 2-7 for contralateral side
- Compare results to previous exam
- Do symptoms and results match? Anything missing? Artifacts?

What should you report in a carotid interpretation?
A
- Report image quality
- A fair or low quality exam may influence the referring physician to obtain further imaging
- Report unusual level of bifurcation
- Report limitations/artifacts, ie calcification
- Report tortuosity, arrhythmias, unusual waveforms
- ie parvus tardus CCA, long duration reversed flow may be from aortic regurgitation
