Unit 13: Lymphatic System Flashcards
What is contained in lymph nodes?
T and B lymphocytes that identify and remove bacteria, viruses, and cancer cells
While intracellular fluid is fluid found within cells (40% of body weight), extracellular fluid is fluid found outside the cells. What type of fluids are extracellular?
Blood plasma, interstitial fluid (ISF), and lymph
What are the 2 ways that lymphatic capillaries transport lymph fluid away from tissues to?
Right lymphatic duct (lymph from right side of head, chest and arm)
Thoracic duct (lymph from below ribs and entire left side of body)
What are 2 types of primary lymphoid organ/tissue? These are where lymphoid stem cells divide and mature
Red bone marrow. Lymphocyte stem cells arise here, site of B proliferation (mitosis) maturation
Thymus gland. Early in development, lymphocyte stem cells migrate here. Site of T lymphocyte proliferation/maturation
What is included in secondary lymphoid organs/tissues? This is where lymphocytes detect and remove pathogens
-Lymph nodes-
-Spleen-
-Mucosal Associated Lymphoid Tissue (MALT)-
What are the 3 types of tonsil?
Pharyngeal
Palatine
Lingual
What is the fluid in lymphatic vessels called?
About 10% of extracellular fluid from capillaries is collected by the lymphatic vessels. Once the fluid is in the vessels, it is called lymph
What is the purpose of lymph nodes?
They contain T and B lymphocytes that cleanses the lymph as it passes through them
What is the cisterna chyli?
Collecting vessels from below the ribs converge to an enlarged lymph vessel, which is the most inferior portion of the thoracic duct
In order to reenter blood circulation what do the 2 ducts in the lymphatic system drain into?
Right lymphatic duct: R subclavian vein
Thoracic duct: L subclavian vein
