Basic Research
Research that explores questions of interest; not intended to have immediate, real-world application

A type of treatment based on the theory that our present self is based on and shaped by our past

An integrated perspective that includes biological, psychological, and socio-cultural outlooks, opinions, and facts

A medical doctor who specializes in mental health, including substance-related disorders
Psychologist
A mental health professional, who is not a medical doctor, who uses psychological evaluations and talk therapy to help people
Representative Sample
A subset of a population that seeks to represent certain characteristics of a larger group
Convenience Sample
Using a sample convenient to the researcher
Humanistic Perspective
A perspective that emphasizes individual personal worth, humane values, and sympathetic-creative nature
Cognitive Perspective
A perspective that emphasizes the importance of memory, perception, attention, and decision-making
Biological Perspective
A perspective that involves studying the brain, immune system, nervous system, and genetics
Random Sample
A subset of randomly selected individuals to represent an entire group

Correlation
A statistical technique used to measure and describe a relationship between two variables
Dependent Variable
The variable that the researchers measure, the one that is impacted
Independent Variable
The variable or characteristic that is manipulated or changed by researchers
Single-Blind Study
A study where only the researcher knows the treatment/intervention given to the patient
Double-Blind Study
A study where neither the researcher nor the patient knows who is receiving the treatment/intervention
Placebo Effect
An effect that is caused by the belief in the benefit of treatment and follows the expectation of feeling better
Standard Deviation
A measurement of how dispersed the data is in relation to the mean
Control Group
A group of people who did not receive treatment or intervention in an experiment
Experimental Group
A group of people who did receive treatment or intervention in an experiment
