Unit 1- Trends in the periodic table Flashcards
Describe atomic radius trend
-increases going down and left
*remember periods=shells
–> moving down a period, youre adding more energy levels since there are more e-
–> every element moving right in a period has 1 more proton than the last, creating a strong attraction pulling radius tighter
Describe ionic radius
-increases right up and right
*Remember ions are gaining or loosing e-
*e- repels eachother, therefor adding will make bigger, taking away will make smaller
what is ionization ENERGY
energy required to REMOVE a valence electron
describe ionization energy trend
-increases moving up & right
–>when electrons are in the same period, it is easier to remove an electron the further it is from the nucleus (higher energy level) since it has less of a pull
what is electron AFFINITY
how much an atom wants to gain an electron
describe electron affinity trend
-increases up & right
*decreases down a period because they are more energy levels that are sheilding the positive nucleus
–>metals don’t want to gain electrons, they want to loose
–>non-metals want to gain electrons
what is electronegativity
ability of an atom to hold electrons tightly
describe electronegativity trend
-increase up & right
-you want to electrons as close to the nucleus as possible ex:F
