Unit 1: Overview Flashcards
Computer mediated communication
Communication methods that have been shifted onto computer based media. Transducers between humans and machines
Chaos theory
The overarching theory for complexity that results in unanticipated outcomes.
- quantity / diversity
- organization
- connectivity
digital divide
The gap between people who have access to affordable, reliable, internet and those who lack it
CPS (current population survey)
A monthly survey of about 60k US households a comprehensive body of data on the labor force, employment, unemployment, persons not in the labor force, hours of work, earnings, and other demographic and labor force characteristics.
ubiquitous communication
data and computational services will be accessible at almost all location, computers will communicate locally via high speed LAN, globally via WAN
high functionality systems
systems will have a large number of function available. So many that users will not have time to learn them through traditional means (manuals etc)
mixed media
Systems will have: images, voices, sounds, video and text data. This media will be exchangeable between users. Consumers electronics (VCRs TVs etc) will partially merge with computers. Computers and print worlds will continue to merge
High bandwidth interaction
The rate at which humans and machines will interact will increase substantially due to changes in speed of graphics and hardware. This will lead to qualitatively different interfaces such as VR or computational video.
large and thin displays
New tech that is large, then, efficient and portable will emerge. This will enable the development of paper-like, pen based, computer interaction.
Embedded computers
Computation will become embedded in all objects. Smart homes, appliances, etc.
Group interfaces
Allows groups to coordinate: meetings, conferences, and group authoring of documents. Wil impact organization and the division of labor.
User tailorability
Altering application to suit personal use. Invention of new apps by individuals rather than generic sources
Information utilities
Banking, shopping, specialized industry applications. The rate of proliferation will increase as bandwidth increases.
dialogue inputs and outputs
The input and control of a computing system with one’s voice - OK Google, cortana, Siri and other voice activated services use dialogue inputs and outputs to control computing functions
