Define organic chemistry.
The study of all carbon-containing molecules.
What are hydrocarbons?
A covalently bonded hydro and carbon.
What forms the βbackboneβ of all biological macromolecules?
Chains and rings of Carbon molecules.
What is a functional group?
A combination of atoms that causes a specific reaction, they attach to Carbon chains and rings
What are the four primary functional groups?
Hydroxyl, Phosphate, Carboxyl, Amino (CAPH)
What is the structure of a hydroxyl group?
OH (alcohol)
What is the structure of a carboxyl group?
-COOH (vinegar)
What is the structure of an amino group?
-NHH or -NH2 (an amino group)
What is a phosphate group?
A phosphorous atom bonded to four oxygens
(part of RNA, DNA, etc)
