Who is Wilhelm Wundt?
“Father of experimental psychology” and the founder of the first psychology laboratory
Who is Edward Titchener?
Tested self-reflective introspection and introduced structuralism. Also studied under Wilhelm Wundt.
What is structuralism?
Wundt and Titchener’s theory of consciousness.
Who is William James?
William James considered the theory of evolution. He studied evolved functions of thoughts and feelings.
What is functionalism?
Promoted by William James influenced by Darwin. Explored how mental and behavioral processes function.
Who is Mary Whilton Calkins?
William James tutored Mary alone after everyone in the class (men) left to not be in a class with a woman. She researched memory. The first woman to become the president of the American Psychological Association.
Who is Margaret Floy Washburn?
Since Harvard denied Mary Whiton Calkins a Ph.D. Margaret Floy Washburn was the first woman with a psychology degree. She was however not allowed to join the group of experimental psychology.
What is behaviorism?
Believe our behavior is influenced by conditioning.
What is a humanistic psychologist?
Humanistic Psychologists look at how current environmental factors can change our potential.
Define Empiricism
Empiricism is the view that knowledge originates in experience and that science should rely on observation and experimentation.
Define introspection
Introspection means to look inwards and observe your own mental and emotional processes.
Define experimental psychology
The study of behavior and thinking using the experimental method
Define cognitive neuroscience
Cognitive neuroscience is the study of the brain activity linked with cognition
What is Psychology?
Psychology is the study of behavior (anything an organism does) and mental processes (internal experiences we infer from behavior).
Who was John B. Watson?
Watson said that science is observation so he redefined psychology as the study of observational behavior.
