Unit 1 List 1 Experimental Design RC Flashcards
Testable Question
Questions that can be answered from observation or experiments.
Non-testable Question
Questions that can’t be answered from observation or experiments.
Quantitative
Data relating to quantity or numbers
Qualitative
Data relating to quality or senses
Trials
The act of testing something
Observation
Watching or noticing something
Empirical Evidence
Information that can be found from observation
Data
Facts and Information used
Model is Science
Analogy
A comparison of two similar things
Prototype
An early model that future products are based off
Variable
Anything in an experiment that can be changed
Hypothesis
An idea that is tested through experiments, observation, and research
Procedure
Steps that lead through a process
Accuracy
How close a measurement is to a known value
Scientific Method
A process with hypotheses, observation, and experiments
Precision
The comparison of two or more measures
Control
When all variables are kept constant to keep them in a controlled experiment
Constant
Parts of variables that do not change in an experiment
Infer
Educated guess based on reasoning or evidence
Predict
To forecast something that with happen in the future
Independent Variable
A variable that does not depend on another variable (x)
Manipulated Variable
A variable that is changed in an experiment to see the reaction of other variables
Sample Size
Number of data points or participants
Dependent Variable
A variable that depends on another variable (y)
Responding Variable
A variable that is observed carefully in an experiment for any changes or responses
Validity
To be valid or acceptable
Trends in Data
A pattern that shows the change of a variable over time
Correlation
The relationship between 2 variables.
Mass
The measure of how much matter is in an object.
Variability
When data varies from it’s average value.
Volume
The measure of how much space an object takes up.
Weight
The force that is acted on an object by gravity.
Percent
A ratio that is shown “out of 100”
Ratio
A comparison between 2 numbers
Rate
A ratio between 2 quantities of different units
Line Graph
A graph with a line connecting multiple points usually used to show change over time.
Bar Graph
A graph with multiple columns showing different variables that is used to compare different groups
Pie Chart
A graph in the shape of a circle with different sections that represent parts of a whole.
Scatter plot
A graph that uses points to show the relationship of 2 variables
Claim
A statement that answers the focus question
Evidence
Information that proves whether or not a claim is true
Reason
Using problem-solving to draw a conclusion
Theory
An explanation of a phenomenon that is not certainly true, but is considered true
Bias
When something is opinionated or favored which can lead to incorrect conclusions
