Unit 1 Life cycle of the skeletal system Flashcards
what is the shape of an individuals skeleton determined by?
Genes and environmental factors
What are the two factors
Mechanical and metabolic factors
what do mechanical factors (1) do and what do metabolic factors (2) do
- Muscles forces acting on the developing bone
2. Supply nutrients to the skeleton
In a full developed skeleton what do bones contain?
living and non living tissue
What are the living tissues?
Blood vessels
nerves
collagen
bone cells
What do all of those living tissues contain? (3 things)
Osteoblasts
Osteoclasts
Osteocytes
What are Osteoblasts?
Cells that deposit calcium to help form bone
What do Osteoclasts do?
Cells that help to eat away old bone
What do Osteocytes do?
Mature osteoblasts that have ended their bone forming role
How does nutrition affect bone formation?
Some food can inhibit the absorption of calcium
How does Sunlight affect Bone formation
It actually helps it because when in the sun the skin can produce vitamin D
What is Vitamin D important for?
The proper absorption of calcium in the small intestine
How does Hormonal Secretions affect bone formations?
Its responsible for the general development of bones
What are hormones produced by?
The Endocrine system
What does the pituitary gland produce?
Growth Hormones
