Unit 1 Lesson 2 Flashcards
Water Cycle
The continuous movement of water between the atmosphere, the land, the oceans, and living things
Evaporation
When liquid water changes to gas (water vapor)
Transpiration
The release of water vapor into the air by plants
Sublimation
When solid water changes directly to water vapor without first becoming a liquid
(Solid to gas)
Condensation
Changing from a gas to a liquid
Precipitation
Any form of water that falls to Earth from the clouds
Examples: rain, snow, hail
Infiltration
When water on land seeps into the ground
Once underground it is called groundwater
How does water move on land and in the oceans?
- Runoff and infiltration
- Ice flow
- Ocean circulation
What does the water cycle transport?
- Energy
- Matter
Desalination
The process of removing salt from ocean water
Why Does it Matter?
Our survival depends on water which makes up about 2/3 of your body
When you breathe out, you release water vapor which becomes part of the water cycle
