Earth’s Atmospheric Layers Flashcards
Layers of the Atmosphere (TSMTE - the silly monkey trills endlessly)
Trophosphere
Stratosphere
Mesosphere
Thermosphere
Exosphere
Trophosphere (extends 11km above Earth)
Closest to Earth. All weather occurs here
Most dense layer
80% of the atmosphere’s mass ( has most of the air)
Stratosphere (extends 50km above Earth)
Contains most of the ozone layer
Free of weather and clouds
As the altitude increases the temperature increases because of the ozone layer
Mesosphere (extends 80 km above Earths surface)
The coldest layer
Most likely to have meteors
Thermosphere
Closest to the sun so it is the hottest layer
Auroras are here
The International Space Station (ISS) is here
Exosphere
Thin layer but the largest layer
Very cold
Space is located here
Has the lowest pressure and is the least dense
Gases in the atmosphere
Oxygen 21%
Nitrogen 70%
Other gases 1%
