Unit 1 Lesson 1 Flashcards
Polarity
Anything that has a positive charge at one end and negative charge at the other end
Cohesion
The property that holds molecules of a substance together
Adhesion
The property that holds molecules of different substances together
Specific Heat
The energy needed to heat a substance by particular amount
Water heats up slowly and cools down slowly
Solvent
A liquid that dissolves substances
Water is the universal solvent (dissolves many things)
What are some of the roles of water on Earth?
A. It influences weather. Weather depends on the amount of moisture in the air
B. It shapes Earth’s surface - by erosion and weathering
C. It supports life (drinking and for crops)
D. It supports human activities like bathing and cleaning
What states of water occur on earth?
Liquid form - most of earth’s water
Gas form - water vapor. Found in earth’s atmosphere
Solid form - ice or snow
Properties of water
A. It sticks to itself (Cohesion)
B. It sticks to other substances (Adhesion)
C. It can absorb large amount of energy (specific heat)
D. It dissolves many things (universal solvent)
E. It has polarity
F. It has capillary action - can move through small tubes
G. It has surface tension
Surface Tension
Tightness across the surface of water
Permeable
Impermeable
Allows water to pass through. Example sand or gravel
Does not allow water to pass through. Example granite
Watershed
A land area that supplies water to a river system
The Mississippi River watershed is the largest in the US
Buoyancy
Ability to float
