Unit 1: Diabetes Flashcards
When in life does type 1 diabetes occur
Childhood
When in life does type 2 diabetes occur
Later in life
Can type 1 diabetics produce insulin
No - no insulin is made
Can type 2 diabetics produce insulin
Yes
How is type 1 diabeates treated
With regular insulin injections
How is type 2 diabetes treated
- Life style and diet changes
- Increase exercise
What are type 2 diabetics less sensitive to
Insulin
Why are type 2 diabetics less sensitive to insulin
Due to a decrease in number of insulin receptors in the liver
In both types of diabetes, when will glucose concentrations rise
After a meal
What part of the body will remove some glucose
The kidneys
As the glucose is removed by kidneys where will glucose appear
In the urine
What is a glucose tolerance test used for
To test and diagnose diabetes
How to know what type of diabetes someone has after taking a glucose tolarance test
Type 1 - remains high
Type 2 - delay of insulin response
How does a glucose tolerance test work
- blood glucose concentrations measured after a period of fasting
- then a glucose solution is consumed
- then changes in blood glucose concentrations are measured for at least 2 hours
What happens in a glucose tolerance test for a diabetic
- Blood glucose concentration will start higher and increase to a much higher level than that of a non-diabetic
- and takes much longer to return to normal
