Unit 1 Concepts 1 Flashcards
What is science?
Science is based on experiment
Give an example of hypothesis in the correct format
If a phone drops from a high place then it will break
Explain the relationship between independent and dependent variables within a hypothesis.
Indep. Variable is the cause and dependent variable is the effect
Differentiate between an observation and an inference
Observation is something you can sense and an inference is a guess made from observations
Explain the difference between accuracy and precision, and the significance of having data that is both
Precision is how close your measurements are to each other and accuracy is how close your measurement is to the correct/accepted value
List the general steps in designing and conducting an experiment
Ask a question Research Construct hypothesis Test Analyze Draw conclusions
What is a fact
An objective, verifiable observation
What is a principle
A statement that is a repeated experimental observation that describes aspects of the world
What is Law?
Broad concept or principle
What is a Theory?
An explanation of an observed phenomenon
What does qualitative mean?
Describes our senses
What does quantitative mean?
Uses #’s to measure something
What is an independent variable
What the experimenter will deliberately change or manipulate in the investigation
What is the dependent variable?
What changes in response to the independent variable
What are constants?
The aspects of an experiment that are held constant
