Unit 1 C - Effects of Ageing Flashcards
What are the physical changes of ageing?
cardiovascular disease degeneration of the nervous tissue osteoarthritis degeneration of the sense organs the reduced absorption of nutrients dementia
What causes cardiovascular disease?
atherosclerosis
What is atherosclerosis?
the clogging up off fats such as cholesterol in the blood vessels walls, which causes narrowing of arteries and blood vessels
What can atherosclerosis result in?
high blood pressure
heart attack
What are some of the risk factors of cardiovascular disease?
- family history of heart disease
- ethnic background
- poor controlled diabetes
- prolonged rise in blood pressure (hypertension)
- poor lifestyle choices
What does nervous tissue allow?
an individual to receive stimuli and process information
What causes degeneration of nervous tissue?
as people age impulses become slower
What are the results of degeneration of nervous tissue?
- slower reflexes
- decreased sensation
- tendency to be clumsy
What is osteoarthritis?
a degenerative disease, which is a result of wear and tear of the joints and the ageing process
What does osteoarthritis cause?
painful and stiffness of joints lack of cartilage which protects surface of bones swelling of joints bony outgrowths less mobility
What is the degeneration of sense organs?
sensory awareness decreases e.g eyes and ears
What does degeneration of sense organs cause?
cataracts
hard time reading
glaucoma
wax in the ear which blocks sound transmission
What are cataracts?
changes in the lenses of our eyes, which become hard and cloudy which can result in blurred vision
What is glaucoma?
is an increase of fluid pressure within the eye, which effects eyesight
What happens to energy requirements as we get older?
decrease - less energy needed
