What are the physical changes of ageing?

What causes cardiovascular disease?
atherosclerosis
What is atherosclerosis?
the clogging up off fats such as cholesterol in the blood vessels walls, which causes narrowing of arteries and blood vessels
What can atherosclerosis result in?
high blood pressure
heart attack
What are some of the risk factors of cardiovascular disease?
- family history of heart disease
- ethnic background
- poor controlled diabetes
- prolonged rise in blood pressure (hypertension)
- poor lifestyle choices
What does nervous tissue allow?
an individual to receive stimuli and process information
What causes degeneration of nervous tissue?
as people age impulses become slower
What are the results of degeneration of nervous tissue?
- slower reflexes
- decreased sensation
- tendency to be clumsy
What is osteoarthritis?
a degenerative disease, which is a result of wear and tear of the joints and the ageing process
What does osteoarthritis cause?
painful and stiffness of joints lack of cartilage which protects surface of bones swelling of joints bony outgrowths less mobility
What is the degeneration of sense organs?
sensory awareness decreases e.g eyes and ears
What does degeneration of sense organs cause?
cataracts
hard time reading
glaucoma
wax in the ear which blocks sound transmission
What are cataracts?
changes in the lenses of our eyes, which become hard and cloudy which can result in blurred vision
What is glaucoma?
is an increase of fluid pressure within the eye, which effects eyesight
What happens to energy requirements as we get older?
decrease - less energy needed
Why is Vitamin D important?
helps absorb calcium
deficiency of vitamin D can cause osteoporosis and bone fractures
Why is Vitamin C important?
essential for several body functions :
- wound healing
- forming and maintaining healthy tissues
What is dementia?
a brain disorder that affects a person’s ability to carry out daily tasks
What is alzheimer’s?
most common type of dementia
What are the symptoms?
memory problems - forgetting recent events and names
asking questions repetitively
becoming confused in unfamilar situations
difficulty finding correct word
difficulty with numbers and handling money in shops
What are the physical effects of depression?
- difficulty falling or staying asleep, oversleeping, or daytime sleepiness
- increased use of alcohol and other drugs
- weight loss or loss of appetite
- fatigue
- giving up or losing interest in hobbies and other pastimes
What are the psychological effects of depression?
- fixation on death, suicidal thoughts or suicide attempts
- loss of self-worth, worries about being a burden. feeling of being worthless
- social withdrawal and isolation, not wanting to be with friends, leave the house or take part in activities
- sadness
