Cognitive dissonance
The feeling of DISCOMFT felt when a person acts in a way that is INCONSISENT with their attitude.
Prejudice
Is holding a NEGETIVE attitude towards the members of a group based SOLELY on their membership of the group.
Internal VS external attributions.
Internal attributions are explaining behaviours in terms of CHARACTERISTICS of the person involved. eg. effort, personality
External attributions are explaining behaviours in terms of the FACTORS of the SITUATION . eg. environment, task.
Attributions
Is the PROCESS by which people EXPLAIN the causes of their and other people’s BEHAVIOURS.
Obedience
Occurs when we FOLLOW a commands of someone with AUTHORITY, or laws and rules of our society.
Stereotyping
Is the PROCESS of GROUPING people into CATORGORIES based on what we know.
The difference between and group and a collective
Group is any COLLECTION of two or more people who INTERACT with and INFLUENCE one another and who share a common GOAL.
Discrimination
Discrimination is the BEHAVIOUR that arises from the ATTITUDE of prejudice.
Groupthink
Occurs when people’s DESIRE to stay LOYAL to the group becomes more important than making the best DESCIONS.
Personal perception
Are the MENTAL processes we use to FORM impressions and draw CONCLUSIONS about personal CHARACTERISTICS of other people.
Stigma
A NEGATIVE label associated with REJECTION by other who are not labelled in that way.
Heuristics
Are a mental SHORTCUT to help make quick and efficient DECISIONS.
Difference between conformity and obedience
Obedience occurs when we FOLLOW a command of someone with AUTHORITY, rules or laws.
Whereas conformity involves CHANGING one’s BEHAVIOUR to match the actions of OTHERS.
Legitimate power
When an individual STATUS/position in a group, organisation or society that gives them the AUTHORITY to use power over those with a LOWER status.
Deindividuation
Is when a person’s IDENTITY within a group OVERRIDES their own identity and self-awareness.
