Unit 1: 2 - Rocks and Building Materials Flashcards
What primary building material can limestone be used to create?
Cement.
What can cement be used to create?
Concrete (when mixed with sand, aggregate and water).
What is limestone mainly made up of?
Calcium carbonate (CaCO3).
What does calcium carbonate thermally decompose into?
CaO and CO2 (Calcium oxide and carbon dioxide).
What do all metal carbonates have in common?
They all react in similar ways when heated or reacted with an acid.
What are the products when a carbonate reacts with an acid?
Water, a salt and carbon dioxide.
What is limewater?
Calcium hydroxide solution.
What can we use limewater to detect?
The presence of CO2 (it will turn cloudy).
How do we make calcium hydroxide?
Adding water to calcium oxide.
Suggest the pH of calcium hydroxide.
>7, as calcium hydroxide is alkali.
Give an agricultural use for calcium hydroxide.
To neutralise acidic soils.
Give an industrial use for calcium hydroxide.
To neutralise acidic gases.
What is made when cement is mixed with sand?
Mortar.
What is mortar used for?
To hold bricks and blocks together in buildings.
What is aggregate?
Small stones or crushed rocks.
