Unit 1&2 Flashcards
Introspection
A method or self-observation in which participants report their thoughts and feelings
Scatter plot
A graphed cluster of dots, each represent the values of two variables. The slope of the points suggests the direction of the relationship between the two variables. Amount of scatter=strength of correlation
Correlation
A measure of the extent to which two variables change together and thus of how well either variables predict the other
Median
The middle score in a distribution
Mean
The average of a distribution (add the scores then dived by the number of scores)
Mode
The most frequently occurring score
Ethics
Anyone/things well being during an experiment
Placebo effect
Experimental results caused by expectations alone
Cross-sectional
Instead of a long study get people from various age groups and measure over time
Validity
The extent to which a test or experiment measures or predicts what its supposed to
Reliability
Reliable measurements
Independent variable
Experimental fact that is manipulated, effect is being studied
Dependent variable
The outcome factor, the variable that may change in response to manipulations of independent
Confounding variable
A factor other than independent that may produce an effect
Case study
A descriptive technique in which one individual or group is studied in depth in the hope of revealing universal principles
