Infants know the world mostly in terms of their sensory impressions— looking, heating, touching, mouthing, and grasping

(2-7 years old)
- learns language but is too young to perform mental operations (imagining an action and mentally reversing it)
- ex: same amount of milk in a short cup vs a tall cup. Child will pick the tall cup thinking there is more (Egocentrism)

- children gain the mental operations that enable them to think logically about concrete events
