Unit 1 Flashcards
Behaviorism
Only objective, observable phenomena in behavior should play a part in psychological research
Classical Conditioning
Neutral stimulus is learned to be associated with another stimulus, and its introduction produces same response as the other stimulus
Blocking
Neutral stimulus not learned because it doesn’t add new information
Information theory
Developed in WW2 that implied that the mind processes information
Introspectionism
Model that said people can be trained to accurately analyze their own thoughts
Problems with Introspectionism
No unconscious influence and people are unable to understand their own thoughts
Noam Chomsky
Critical of Skinner’s idea that people learn language by conditioning. Challenged the “black box”
Operant Conditioning
Learning driven by reinforcements. Learner associates between an action and the result.
Turing Machines
If the Turing Machine used a process to do arithmetic, then the mind probably has a process as well. Thus, the mind is worth studying.
Unconditioned stimulus
Food
Unconditioned Response
Salivation
Neutral Stimulus
Bell
Conditioned Stimulus and Neutral Stimulus
Food and Bell introduced at the same time
Conditioned Stimulus
Bell
Conditioned Response
Salivation
