Unit 1 Flashcards
What the item is able to do.
Function
Structure
The item’s shape, size, and material.
PMC stands for
Program. Metabolism. Container.
What determines if a structure is alive?
The PMC model of life.
The fundamental building block of a chemical element?
Atom.
What are organisms made out of?
Cells.
What is an organelle?
Specialized structures that reform various jobs inside of cells.
What do tissues make up in an organism?
Organs and organ systems.
What is a molecule?
Multiple atoms bonded together.
What happens if the structure changes?
The function changes.
How does function rely on structure?
What an item can do relies on the structure.
How is a tire’s structure specifically made for the function?
The treads on the tire helps brakes and mobility. The round shape allows it to move quickly for fast and safe travel.
How does structure determine function?
What something is made out of determines the function.
Is an onion alive according to the PMC model of life?
Yes.
What makes a virus hard to categorize as a living organism.
It has all of the living characteristics only with a host, without a host it can’t do anything.
Does not follow PMC.
Nonliving
Why are chicken eggs classified in between alive and not alive?
They have the potential to live but first need to be fertilized to do so.
If atoms make up a biosphere, does that mean a biosphere can make up an atom?
No, because biospheres are made up out of atoms which means they can’t make up atoms since biospheres are large and atoms are microscopic.
